fun and bleh
Sep. 6th, 2002 04:25 pmLast night was great. After training, I stopped in quickly at Anime Kingdom, a little stripmall store that I'd walked by every day on the way to training but hadn't had a chance to visit. It wasn't very large, but it was cute and had a decent selection (lots of models and highpriced dvds). The salesguy was extremely helpful when I was having trouble figuring out which Anime singles mix cd I wanted to buy (I listen to them in the car). I also ended up getting a cute plastic folder, which I'll probably use to hold Rhiann's stuff in game, and two books of manga. I don't usually read manga, but I was really intrigued when I looked through these, and they didn't seem to be that expensive. One is called Chobits, and the other is...hmm, don't remember right now. Something about Kingdom, or Ladder?
After dropping everything off in my hotel room, I set out to find my friend Rachel's house (fairly common name, so hopefully she won't mind me using it here). It was about 6:15, so I was worried about hitting rush hour, but it wasn't bad at all. I did hit some traffic on 405, but it was moving and I didn't have far to go, and 90W / 5N were as empty as Mass. highways are on the weekends (or more so). I'm really surprised how much I know about Seattle highways after having driven on them about 3 times - I think I had to look at the directions fewer times than I look at directions in Mass. The highways and most major roads also have these great reflective bumps in between the lanes, which make me feel so much more relaxed, because they let people know when they're drifting out of their lanes.
I made it to the house without needing any backtracking, even though I had forgotten to write down whether to take I-5 north or south (I guessed the right way - yay learning to trust my direction sense and common sense!). R lives in a very nice residential area of Seattle that's very convenient to shops and restaurants (she doesn't need a car), and the house also has a small garden in the back where they have some vegetables (I took a picture of a giant zucchini) and roses. I really liked it. We went out, along with one of her housemates, and ate at this small Italian bistro about 10 minutes away by car. We were actually trying to go to a soup restaurant that closes at 2pm in the summer for some reason, but the Italian place (a couple of doors down) was very good as a substitute. I was directed to drive along Ravenna, which is a very beautiful boulevard with trees in the middle and along the sides - sort of like Comm Ave in Newton but on a smaller scale (both street and houses) and much curvier. Anyway, we got to talk and catch up on each others' lives. She is very happy in Seattle and loves her friends here and her job. It was wonderful to get to see her, as I don't think we've really talked since we graduated about two years ago. We're going to try and keep in better touch from now on. :)
On the way back, I got on 405 south instead of 405 north (much more representative of my nonexistent direction sense than my success on the trip there), but I figured it out immediately, got off the highway, and easily got back on it in the other direction. I love cities and highways that were planned properly.
